An abbreviation of 'confidencetrick man", being the colloquial term for a person whose main objective is to play on the inexperience of others in order to obtain the maximum gain for the minimum cost to himself. He achieves this by creating a quite unjustifiable degree of confidence in his machinations is known as the 'mark' and each particular profit-making operation is referred to as a 'scam'. Although he is commonly associated with the taproom and the racetrack, his methods are not foreign to the world of high finance.
