Convertible loan stock

Occasionally companies issue loan stock, with a right to convert this stock into ordinary shares or preference shares at some stated time in the future. This is known as convertibie loan stock. The term is also applied to stock issued by the government, which the holder has the right to convert into new stock instead of obtaining repayment.
